The Streetlight Gift Registry
In 2008, volunteers took a thorough look at ways donations could be used in assistance to the orphanage and learning centre in Tacloban. How were dollars spent with donations to Streetlight Canada? In the future, how far can one dollar of Canadian currency go in foreign aid? You might be surprised when you take a look at the equivalent of an hour of work at a minimum wage job, a nice dinner for two, or that new music player you've wanted for so long.
Below you'll find some examples of how donations were maybe spent while we were overseas- there are many needs to be met for these children, and we think you'll agree that every end is worthwhile. We hope you'll see the opportunity to again provide aid in the future!
One basketball, soccer ball, or volleyball - $10

Last year's project was to renovate the gym into an appropriate space for sports. However, overtime equipment does need to be replaced. Buying a ball for the kids will ensure lots of playtime.
One meal for the children at the shelter - $20
|
When Streetlight Canada visits the Philippines, there will be an expected 28 boys. This donation will provide a full meal for all of the boys, which has become more difficult with the current rice crisis in Southeast Asia.
One night feeding for forty street children - $25
|
Streetlight has made it a priority to become a positive force in the community, not just for the children it takes in. By going on night walks every couple of weeks, Streetlight is able to interact with the children of the slums and show that they are there to help, not harm.
One set of basketball nets for the gym - $30

A day trip for the kids - $50
|
Could include outings to the beach, wall climbing, or attending local fairs and festivals for all the children at the shelter.
A set of clothes for one child - $75
|
This package would clothe one child for one year or more. Includes -but not limited to- a school uniform, Sunday clothes, sandals, several outfits and hygiene items (toothbrush, paste etc.).
School supplies for a child for one year - $100

Transportation to school, uniforms, as well as all writing and learning basics such as pencils, paper, and textbooks.
Medical aid - $150
|
Includes doctor’s appointments and basic medical care.
SUPPORT PACKAGES

"Play Sponsorship"- $200
|
The children Streetlight supports are often faced with a difficult day-to-day routine of survival; there is little chance for them to simply be children.
With the “Play Sponsorship,” Streetlight will be able to host an event that gives approximately 100 children the chance to play and have fun often something that is missing from their lives. This donation will assist in the organization, supplies, and celebration for a day of fun for these children. Specific event are yet to be determined but would mostly likely be in the form of a sports tournament, talent show or birthday parties for all the children at the shelter
"Tuberculosis Medical Sponsorship"- $300

Most of the children are affected by tuberculosis, or will be a some point. Tuberculosis is a disease carried by street wildlife (rats) for which children must constantly be on guard. If not treated the children will die from this disease.
This sponsorship will allow a child have appropriate medical treatment to cure TB, which takes six to nine months. It will also help the child maintain good health afterwards.
"Child Sponsorship"- $500

Would support buying daily meals, school supplies to succeed in their education, and day trips in and around their community to enrich their experience of growing up.
Help a child for one year to achieve not only a level of normalcy, but enrichment, in the most important years of their development.
Donations will not necessarily be spent on the specific item you have purchased if demand for that item has already been met. In that case, your donation will spent on the next best alternative for the children. All donations go directly to aiding the children of Streetlight.
